NeCoRo

NeCoRo, the robotic cat by Omron Corporation, was an early foray into the world of companion robots, designed to offer the comfort and interaction of a pet without the associated responsibilities. Although specific studies on NeCoRo are not prevalent in recent literature, the concept of robotic pets as therapeutic companions continues to be a significant area of research.

Recent studies in the field of Socially Assistive Robotics (SAR) have emphasized the importance of personalized human-robot interaction, highlighting the potential of robots to adapt to and support the varying needs of individuals across different age groups and abilities (Mataric, 2023). Furthermore, the application of conversational interfaces in robotics, as explored in reminiscence therapy for individuals with dementia, showcases the evolving capabilities of robots to engage in meaningful social interactions (Céspedes et al., 2022).

In conclusion, while NeCoRo itself may not be at the forefront of current research, the principles it was built upon continue to influence the development of therapeutic companion robots. These robots are increasingly recognized for their ability to provide emotional support and improve the quality of life for users, reflecting the enduring relevance of NeCoRo’s pioneering design.
